Having practiced law since 1995, Jonathan W. Hickman’s experience is extensive and wide-ranging. Jonathan started his practice handling bankruptcy cases representing both creditors and debtors. As an associate with the Rosenzweig firm in Newnan, Georgia, Jonathan worked closely with partners on complex legal matters including litigation in Federal Court involving complicated summary judgment proceedings and jury trial experience.
Jonathan’s practice in metro Atlanta, Georgia, has always varied as he represented clients in business and personal matters, including business organization creation and business workout cases. As an adjunct college professor for several years at the State University of West Georgia, Jonathan taught a course on the legal environment of business that expanded his knowledge of business law. Jonathan currently teaches media law and media production finance at the University of North Georgia.
But there is another important dimension to Jonathan’s practice. In 2003, Jonathan entered into a contract with Coweta County, Georgia, to provide that county with indigent defense services. He has served as the chief public defender for the State Court of Coweta County in a contract capacity since that time. Jonathan’s commitment to practicing criminal law perfectly complements his metro Atlanta entertainment law firm giving him a unique perspective.
As a long-time and accomplished entertainment journalist and published novelist, writing for various movie-related print and online publications (such as Paste Magazine and Entertainment Today), Jonathan’s interest in the entertainment industry naturally led him to offer his legal services to filmmakers. Jonathan has appeared on television and continues to review movies for various print and online publications contributing weekly to the Tomatometer on rottentomatoes.com. Jonathan is, also, a member of the Southeastfilm Critics Association (SEFCA).
Through his entertainment law firm, Jonathan has provided legal support to several feature, commercial, and short film projects. His entertainment law experience includes everything from soup to nuts—creating the entity through which a film is made, drafting all deal memos and other contracts necessary to memorialize the steps in film production, and assisting in the deliverables for distribution. And because Jonathan has made feature and commercial projects himself as a filmmaker, he is in a unique position to understand the entertainment law needs of filmmakers and film producers.
"We are very excited for Jonathan to join the department. With his legal expertise, entertainment law experience, and filmmaking accomplishments, he brings a unique skill set that will be a great asset to the university."--Dr. Jeff Marker, Chair of the Communication, Media & Journalism Department at the University of North Georgia
